In the past years, both electronic music production and the evolution of video games, has experienced unprecedented growth, resulting in it forming part of the cinematographic industry budgets, generating income and earnings.

Evermore, million-dollar projects are launched onto the market, on which hundreds of professionals from multiple sectors, work as programmers, artists, experts in marketing, graphical, technical designers of sound … etc.

The video games scene experiences an evident need, for qualified personnel that undertakes all the work that is involved in the creation of the music and sound effects of these projects.

Independently of the size of the projects: it can be about, a simple game developed by an independent video game company with limited personnel to daunting technical achievements, that year after year, make millions of players open-mouthed. All of them, need music and sound in order for the gaming experience to be complete.

The musical composition for video games course is intended for all those interested in learning how to create a soundtrack, from the study of simple programming till the day of recording is undertaken in a recording studio, be it with a Jazz combo, a Great Orchestra, with electronic sounds or any another sonorous need that the project may require.

The intention of this course is to bring the student closer to a real-life experience of the management, composition, and recording of a soundtrack for a video game. We will study each one of the steps that are necessary to take in order for you to not only know, not only how to work in the industry in an efficient manner but also how to network in order to attain success.

Iniciación - Level 1
  • Percussion and metals orchestration
  • History of music in video games
  • FMOD - middle-ware engine
  • Audiokinetic Wwise
  • MIDI sequencing and orchestral template creation
  • Sibelius
  • Instrumentation and MIDI orchestration, dubbing, melodic arrangement, and harmony in virtual instrument sequencers
  • Sound design

School workstations and recording studios are available for students to self-study and practice concepts and complete course assignments. The spaces offered are allocated according to the course requirements and development.

Advanced - Level 2
  • Chords arrangement, 3 voice technique, spreads …etc.
  • Voicings, drop 2, alterations, substitutions, step domain, diminished step chords, interior alterations of chords
  • Big Band Orchestration, free baritone, comping, static and dynamic tuttis
  • Re-harmonization
  • Changing bass chords, use, and construction of quarters and its variants
  • Harmonic omissions
  • Modal harmony, creation, connections, and disposition
  • Scale/chord relation in accordance with the technique used
  • Recording of a chord quintet
  • Orchestration for chords and wood
  • Analysis of melody and harmony with regards to the genre and period of time
  • Orchestration effect techniques

  • Resources for auditory fatigue management of players
  • Orchestral textures
  • The study and analysis of musical scores applied to film

Personal
  • For over-16-year-olds, only.
  • Accedited experience in music and basic knowlege of music theory.

Schedules

October 2024 intake - 9 months in duration.
Classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday in the following available schedules:
  • Morning schedule from 08:30 am to 11:30 am.
  • Morning schedule from 11:30 am to 14:30 pm.
  • Afternoon schedule from 16:00 pm to 19:00 pm.
  • Evening schedule is from 19:00 pm to 22:00 pm.

Observations
  • A minimum of 6 students are required to open the course
  • Class groups have a maximum of 12 students to personalize monitoring
  • Practical groups have a maximum of 6 students to personalize monitoring

The methodology used in the course is based on a blended learning format, incorporating activities that evolve in our classrooms and recording studios, supported by our virtual campus. Said activities include collaborative practices, magisterial classes, discussion forums, and group projects among others. The course content is available online, and accessible 24 hours, on any electronic device (i.e. computer, tablet and mobile).

The debate forums will stimulate critical thinking/analysis along with the exchange of ideas. The practices and projects objective is, learning by doing, and working in teams with other students. This is all closely overseen and led by our highly specialized educators, all of whom have extensive experience in the field.
